Everyone has unique talents, and discovering them is a journey that can be enriched with the human-centred support. As a community, we have a vital role in helping children and young people realise their full potential, especially those with additional needs.
Having worked with students aged 4-17 diagnosed with ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Down Syndrome, and Asperger’s Syndrome, I have seen firsthand how tailored support can help children re-engage with their communities, build social connections, develop learning abilities, and gain independence.
Accessing Support Through the NDIS
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provides funding for Australians with a permanent and significant disability. This funding can be used to access a wide range of supports, including therapies, social groups, and skill-building activities.
How to Apply for NDIS Funding
Check Eligibility
Visit the NDIS Eligibility Checklist to see if your child qualifies.
Gather Supporting Documents
Obtain reports and assessments from health professionals (e.g., paediatricians, psychologists, therapists) that detail your child’s diagnosis and how it impacts their daily life.
Make an Access Request
Call the NDIS on 1800 800 110 or complete the Access Request Form online or via your local NDIS office.
Planning Meeting
If approved, you’ll be invited to a planning meeting where you’ll discuss your child’s needs and goals. It’s helpful to prepare by thinking about the supports your child needs at home, school, and in the community.
Receive Your Plan
Once your plan is approved, you can start using your NDIS funding to access services and supports.
